Burger Bar Toppings

Nutritious build-a-burger bar toppings or sides!

Colourful burger bar toppings can take a burger to the next level. When entertaining a crowd, setting up a burger bar is a great option from the point of view of ease and budget. Burger patties can be braaied or grilled and are a win for most guests. For small crowds, consider making burger patties from lean mince. Add marinated chicken fillets for variety and health conscious guests.

That said, adding colour and nutrition is both important and easy with these 5 very doable burger bar toppings recipes. The bonus, with the exception of the slaw, they can be done a day ahead. The pickled red onions can be done 2 – 3 days ahead.

Tomato Salsa

6 medium tomatoes

1 large red onion

6 spring onions

½ bunch fresh coriander (1/4 cup chopped)

2 limes (juice only)

1 Tablespoon vinegar

4 Tablespoons olive oil

Salt and pepper to taste

Dice and combine all the ingredients

Pineapple salsa

1 medium pineapple

1 red pepper

½ red onion

¼ cup chopped coriander

3 Tablespoons lime juice

¼ teaspoon fine salt

Dice and combine all the ingredients

Burger slaw

Cabbage, shredded

Carrots, grated

Mayonnaise

Salt

Combine the ingredients. Red and green cabbage together with grated carrot and baby spinach make a beautiful rainbow slaw

Hummus

1 x 400 g chickpeas with half chickpea liquid (or water)

1 Tablespoon olive oil

1 Teaspoon lemon juice

1 teaspoon garlic

½ teaspoon ground cumin

¼ teaspoon salt

Blend all the ingredients into a smooth paste

Pickled Red Onions

3 – 4 large red onions, thinly sliced

2 cups vinegar

1 tsp salt

1 tsp sugar

Mustard seeds

Bay leaves

Pour boiling water over the diced onions in a colander and allow to drain

Bring the vinegar, salt and sugar to a simmer and turn off the heat. Allow to cool slightly

Pack the onions tightly into a glass jar, add mustard seeds or bay leaves or both

Pour the vinegar solution into the jar and seal it
