Holiday Health

Holiday celebrations and entertaining always seem to revolve around food! However, just because Christmas comes but once a year, it does not mean that your healthy eating habits need to be sacrificed completely …. especially if your New Year’s resolution is to start eating more healthily!  Retaining healthy habits such as a high fibre breakfast and regular exercise helps to retain your shape.  Find tips and healthy recipes below!

5 tips for a healthier Christmas season:

1. Avoid drinking beverages high in sugar: Make your own iced teas with xylitol, and flavour water with fruits and vegetables. Drink a cordial with soda water for a refreshing sparkling beverage. Dilute fruit juice and make your own ice lollies for the kids.

2. Plan and stagger your baking: Choose a few traditional recipes and make them for specific celebrations or guests. If you enjoy baking, give some of your creations away as gifts. Add a healthy recipe or two, creating new traditions.

3. Do not skimp on vegetables during the holiday season: Prepare vegetables daily to prevent a reduced intake of valuable nutrients in addition to the inevitable indulgence throughout the holidays. Keep vegetables crisp and free from creamy cheese sauces. Roast vegetables with fresh herbs for flavour filled meal accompaniments. Keep meals simple when there are no guests to impress.

4. Portion control remains important: If dessert is more regular than usual, stick to small servings and do not have a second helping of food. When entertaining, incorporate fresh fruit into your desserts. Plate desserts in the kitchen to avoid unnecessary temptation for second helpings. “Out of sight, out of mind” is too true when it comes to food (if you are already satisfied).

5. Be ACTIVE: Maintaining a healthy weight through the holiday season requires the use of the excess energy consumed. Energy output must match energy input. Plan active family outings such as beach days, swimming, nature walks, bicycling and gardening.
