Scary stats reveal that obesity is on the rise in South Africa!
The 2012 South African National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (SANHANES) report reveals that:
- Overweight and obesity is more prevalent in girls than boys aged 2-14 years
- The prevalence of overweight has increased from 10.6 to 18.2 % in 9 years
- Obesity in females increased by 12 % in 9 years
And most alarming….
The highest prevalence of obesity was found in children aged 2-5 years!
It is time to undo the damage! The theme for Nutrition Week is
“Eat LESS… choose your portion with caution”
The best way to combat unwanted weight gain is to keep your energy balance in check! Simply put, energy intake must be less than or equal to energy output.
High intakes of fat and sugar make this impossible, especially if there is no regular physical activity. Increasing portions sizes and the regular intake of meals away from the home result in an energy intake greater than what is required and are largely responsible for the rise in the prevalence of overweight and obesity.
Making good portion control a daily habit and avoiding foods high in fat, sugar and salt is the best way to combat obesity and its health related risks. Physical activity is also essential for maintaining a healthy weight and heart!
Tips for practicing portion caution:
- Avoid using large plates, bowls and serving utensils
- Use smaller glasses
- Stick to regular meal and snack times
- Avoid snacking in between your usual meal and snack times
- Take stock of what you eat, enjoy your food
- Plan ahead, pack a lunch box
- Avoid frequenting restaurants or take away outlets on your own
- Snacks should be low in fat, salt and sugar
- Snacks should preferably not be baked or cooked (exception:popcorn)
- Check the recommended serving size on treat foods and stick to it, ration your portions into smaller containers if necessary
