Add FIBRE in 5 ways

I often find myself advising clients to add fibre to their diets. The reason for this is simply that fibre has many, well researched, health benefits to offer and adding it to each meal is an easy way to promote health.  Fibre is often overlooked as a nutrient but it has an important place in our nutrient requirements and you will find it in most nutritional tables on food products. Essential to gut health and the prevention of constipation, dietary fibre intake helps to reduce cholesterol while promoting healthy weight maintenance. Fibre is natures appetite suppressant and plays an important role in blood glucose stability and therefore diabetes management.

Health promotion for long term health and quality of life should be a priority for all family members. While good nutrition is important for the management of diseases such as diabetes and heart disease, good nutrition reduces the risk of disease development. Type 2 diabetes is not an old persons disease. It can affect teenagers and young adults with poor eating habits, sedentary lifestyles and desk jobs.

Adding fibre to your daily diet could be a very significant lifestyle change if you are not currently meeting the guideline for fibre intake of 25 – 20 grams per day. To add fibre to your diet is a quick way to improve the nutrient profile of your diet. Increasing the fibre content of your diet is neither difficult or costly.

The simple swaps below will make adding fibre to your daily diet easy.

5 ways to add fibre:

  1. Replace white bread, crackers, rice, cereals and pasta with wholewheat varieties
  2. Add lentils, dried beans or chickpeas to salads, soups, stews and curries
  3. Use oats instead of bread crumbs when making meat balls or burger patties
  4. Eat vegetables and fruit everyday
  5. Snack on nuts, homemade popcorn or fruit instead of crisps, pastries or salty crackers
